HIGHCLERE CASTLE = ‘DOWNTON ABBEY’

‘Downton Abbey’ the TV series was filmed here. Highclere Castle  is a member of the Historic Houses Association

It was a lovely warm day, and it is not open that often, so there were lots of visitors

The present house was designed by Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament, and it was finished in 1878

The kitchens etc are not so grand!

There are several unusual benches

The hedges are huge

The Monks Garden

A new rose garden

There were lots of snake’s head fritillaries

Primroses and daffodils were still out

 

And tulips

Lots of trees in blossom

New leaves

On the way home we stopped of at Barbury Castle Hill Fort
