Karlsplatz, better known as Stachus, is formed by the Karlstor gate with a semicircle of buildings on both side, now with a fountain in front. There is a shopping centre underneath.

We were here at the right time to hear and see the Glockenspiel play for 15 minutes. First the top characters moved, then the dancers below twirled.

Marienplatz –named for St Mary’s column

has the New Town Hall and the 14th century Old Town Hall with its tower – white buildings on right
