We walked from Slad Road though New Mills and up to Summer Street. This becomes Slad Lane and was the way from Stroud to Slad before Slad Road was built in 1800. Why is anything called “new”, old?

At the Vatch we looked at the windows. These houses were built about 1870 (a lady told us)

This 17th C house was once The Rifleman’s Arms public hosue

There was once a huge mill at the Vatch. It is difficult to imagine it now.

We then took a steep track up to Wickridge Hill and then down Folly Lane. There was once a folly that belonged to The Grove (now Hawkwood College).
