1st to 8th July 2025 A week at Matlock

We stayed in this Edwardian street, which was handy for the train and buses.

A lovely park

We walked up to the war memorial on the hill and passed the church in the old part of town

John Smedley owned a mill  near Cromford and designed Riber Castle, on a hill overlooking Matlock, 1862-1868. He also owned a hydrotherapy building in Matlock, which is now the County Council headquarters and Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire.

A heritage railway runs from Matlock station to Rowsley – it took us back to the 1940s. We met a lady from the French Resistance on the train

There was a “fire” at the intermediate station – put out with buckets of water

1940s music and dancing at Rowsley station

Re-enactors had set up army camps

There were refugees

There was a battle that we watched from the platform

lots of flashes and bangs, then a train was blown up

The Germans surrendered

Over 50 took part
