The easiest way to go to the Heights of Abraham, on top of the cliffs, is by cable car from Matlock Bath. It was a lead mining area, but became a tourist attraction in 1787.

We met the owner and a cavern guide, both from 1854, who gave us tours

Great Rutland Cavern – The Victorian guide told us about the lead miners who worked here

There are trails to view points with sculptures along the route

The Lookout Tower, 1844, has great views of Matlock

Smedley’s Hydro at Matlock, now the County Hall

The Great Masson Cavern has a light show and a guide gave us a geology lesson
