We had a guided tour around the outside of Belper Mills, then followed two heritage walk leaflets around the town.
Jedediah Strutt built early water-powered cotton spinning mills here from 1776. The first ones have gone and this one was built in 1912, after the Strutt family’s time.
Son William Strutt designed buildings and the weir (1797)
A Strutt decendant made gardens by the river for the locals in 1906
The Strutt family built Long Row about 1790 for their workers. Women and children worked in the cotton spinning mill and workshops were built for the men to work in
More workers houses – each had a pigsty. Part 0f the road has never been tarmaced
